Where Chocolate Brownies Are Born
Move over cupcakes, the brownie has arrived!
The Brownie Box on Old Brompton Road opened its doors recently and has been tempting the Kensington and Chelsea pack with chocolate ever since.
A family-run business, managed by South African sisters Niki and Kristi, it has a warm and friendly atmosphere with a very personal touch on customer service. The old-fashioned cake boutique specialises in brownies and blondies (the brownie’s fairer, white chocolate sibling), but the list of delights doesn’t end there. There is a selection of cupcakes and cakes, muffins and tortes. Among the favourites are the peanut butter blondie, rocky road brownie, lemon and yogurt cake, Belgian chocolate fridge cake and of course they do a mean red velvet too. And frankly, as far as carrot cake goes, you won’t find better.
The muffins on a lighter note offer something slightly less indulgent while remaining just as delectable. The healthy wholemeal oat, apple and blueberry muffin has been a hit and the brownie muffin is simply irresistible...
Everything is baked with love and care on the premises each morning and the same care goes into every cup of Illy coffee that they make. The girls have been on Illy training to ensure that each espresso is topped with the right golden crema and every cappuccino has beautifully steamed milk.
The shop is cosy and quaint to match the company’s history. All the recipes have been collated from generations of the family’s collection and new recipes are adapted to have the Brownie Box stamp on them.
Brownie Box customers become friends. They know they will get delicious home-baked treats along with friendly service and a welcoming place to enjoy their tea or plan their parties. Brownie boxes can be bought as gifts or for functions and come in any quantities. Cupcakes and cakes can be ordered for parties and every event is treated as unique. Just speak to one of the girls about your theme or ideas and they will do whatever they can to make it happen just the way you want it.
Each special occasion is catered for, so look out for spooky Halloween cakes and cookies, Christmas pies and Valentines’ indulgences.
The business started in South Africa with self-taught baker and mother of the Brownie Box girls, Leigh Markou. From a lifelong relationship with chocolate grew a passion for baking and creating tastes that she and her friends could drool over. Restaurants and cafes got wind of what was happening in the Markou’s kitchen and the rest is chocolate-coated history.
